rolex explorer 36mm vs 40mm
I have a 7 inch wrist and find the new explorer 2 to big and clunky. The previous generation is far better in size on my wrist. Love the orange hand and dial on the new one. I'm seriously mulling a Rolex Explorer II 216570 but am concerned about my 6.3" wrists. Tried it on at an AD but of course the AD insists it looks fine (don't trust the buggers, they're just trying to move the piece). I'd appreciate any slim wrist photos, preferably in a mirror to avoid the foreshortening. My wrist is 7 1/2 inches but round. A round wrist means that thick watches do not work for me and any watch over 38mm can wear very large. As you know, I loved my 40mm (actually 39mm) EXPII but the black wore small. Dimensionally, as mentioned, the Explorer II measures in at 42mm across, which for some is simply too big. But, because the case is relatively slim at 12mm thick, it does wear smaller than you may think. In fact, the Explorer II is a full millimetre slimmer than a Submariner Ref.116610 . and you can tell.
The Explorer II has a safety locking clasp, and inside is a small “comfort extension” that opens up the bracelet a small amount but it doesn’t have the more sophisticated micro-adjust system of the Rolex Submariner and other diving watches.
Starting with the black dial, what jumps out is that the hour, minute, and 24-hour hands are now all white gold. On the Polar version, you'll notice that the hands appear less glossy. Both new versions have a small crown between "Swiss" and "Made" at the 6 .Produced between 2011 and 2021, the Explorer II 216570 is a 42mm stainless steel sports watch that features both a date display and GMT functionality. The older 40mm case was widely considered the goldilocks size, part of the reason many prospective Explorer II buyers consider the older variants, as they fit better on small to average sized wrists.
This movement features the best that Rolex currently offers: Chronergy escapement, 70 hours of power reserve, blue Parachrom balance spring and Paraflex shock absorbers. In short, this movement is more efficient, more accurate, more robust, and lasts longer without the need for winding. This Oyster Perpetual Explorer II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet features a white dial with an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand and hour markers with a Chromalight display.
