I’ve long felt that Panerai watches were too big too expensive and pretty ugly. Recently, I tried one on and it didn’t look horrible on my gigantic wrist. Recently, I tried one on and it didn’t look horrible on my gigantic wrist. Since then they’ve started to grow on me for their statement and style.
From a watch nerd perspective, Panerai's utter lack of transparency, QC issues, and quality-cost ratio. Most recently, their newer P.9010 has been neutered with no hacking or handwinding, and it's completely undecorated. Panerai has had a lot of issues with reposting fakes on their Instagram, poor reference number system, being sleezy and dishonest with their movements, and a blatant disrespect for their community the Paneristi. Panerai was a casing specialist who made compasses and other instruments for divers. It made total sense for them to do what they did best - make waterproof cases. Their watches was used for years by military divers. I think the nationality and other aspects you are hinting at is irrelevant.
All that said, 'Hate' is a strong word; I think the word 'overrated' might be the more accurate descriptor of the anti Panerai sentiment. Additionally, while it is true there are brand detractors, there also is much more of a cult following than for many brands. Panerai is a luxury brand just based on the price alone. In terms of "quality", my personal opinion is that Panerai's case and movement finishing does not justify the price. The Luminor Due line is complete crap. They look and feel .

I think there are two reasons for anti-Panerai sentiment - not everyone likes big watches and some people think it doesn't make sense to pay Panerai prices for watches with ETA/Valjoux movements. I say everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion and ultimately people vote with their wallets. Panerai's popularity was brought about by their trendiness. Like all trends, this one is fading. I suspect 44-47mm watches will look as silly to most of the watch world in a few years as they do to me today. These camouflage straps are strikingly ugly – and some of the watches themselves are too. Panerai can do better.This is not to say that oversized Panerai watches are bulky and ugly. Dial Colors. It is important to remember that even these submersible watches are still crafted by Swiss watchmakers with only the finest and most careful touches.
