It, too, clocks in at 39mm, only now it more closely resembles the 14270. The newer reference brings a slight curvature to their termination, as well as a more even brush pattern that matches the end link of the bracelet, unlike the older model. More importantly, the distance between the lugs has been reduced from 20mm to 19mm. You don’t see many explorers on leather straps because, as with many modern Rolex watches, the Explorer lug holes are positioned quite close to the case, which, when combined with some sharp bevelling between the lugs, tears up most leather straps.
The current reference 124270 is slightly thicker and shorter from lug to lug. But what makes the biggest difference, in my eyes, is that the bracelet starts at 19mm wide and tapers down to 14mm. The bracelet on my Explorer starts at 20mm wide and ends at .
The Rolex Explorer case size is 39mm in diameter, making it quite larger than previous Rolex Explorers, yet still very reasonable and sophisticated in size. If you are used to smaller watches at around 36mm, it won’t take long to adjust to the extra 3mm. Congrats on the new Explorer and nice review. It is not the 36mm size that I cannot adjust to, it is the 19mm lug width combined with the taper to 14mm. If this had been the traditional 20mm taper to 16mm at the clasp, I would be much more interested in . In my opinion it wears best on a larger 7"+ wrist. It does wear ok on my small 6.25 " wrist because of the moderate lug to lug but I would prefer the 36 mm version to be honest. But for you the size is perfect.
